Happy New Year

Happy New Year my friends, I hope that 2011 is a wonderful year for you and your family.

Some thoughts, on 2011.

Be good to each other and help each other out.

Prepare like you never have before. For peace of mind.

Learn and share information, but do your own research. Do not blindly follow anything or anyone.

Read daily.

Tell your family and friends that you love them, and do it often. I am dead serious about this.

This is a generic list I know. I just wanted to give you some things to think about.

Make 2011 the best year of your life. I know that it will be my best year.

I believe in you.

Christmas 2010

Tiff spoiled me again this Christmas, she always does.

She got me a Scottevest Expedition jacket, a Galco Royal Guard IWB holster, a Casio Pathfinder watch, and a Maxpedition Jumbo bag.

I will do reviews on all of these soon.

Hoods Woods Videos
I have been working on a project to review the videos that Hoods Woods puts out. I had planned to do a review each week of one of the videos. Well, I have decided not to do those reviews. We recieved our copy of Survival Quarterly the other day and as I was scanning through it I found that there is a review of the video that goes with the issue of the magazine. I completely forgot that each issue includes a review of the dvd associated with the issue. These reviews are very well done and are very well complete. I do not think that I could do a better job.

You can buy the dvd’s here http://survival.com/

Operation TriGoatwell
Tiff has been doing a lot of research into the route that we will be taking to Tennessee and back. We are going to stop in Georgia on the way and visit Andersonville Prison and General James Longstreets gravesite. On the way back we are going to stop at the Manassas, Antietem and Gettysburg battlefields. I have been to Gettysburg once before but all of the other places will be new to me. I am very excited about it.

Our trip will cover 17 states and about 6000 miles. It is going to be fun.

TSP Gear Shop.
We received our bags that we ordered last week and will be testing them out to see if they are going to be put in the Gear Shop. We ordered the bags from Sawtooth Tactical and Survivalgearbags.com. Both outfits were awesome in their prices and service.

Books
This week I started reading Lucifers Hammer by Larry Niven.

Have a great week

TSP Gear Shop.
We ordered a few bags this week to test and see if they are something that we can use in the Gear Shop. I want to get some cool TSP branded bags in the store as soon as we can. We also are checking into some Garden gear. Drthumbs offered to do some research for us and man he really came through. He sent me links to some nice merchandise and we are all over it.

I-pod Touch.
I like my Touch more and more each day. I have only downloaded a few apps for it. Only free ones so far. If you know of some good apps that you want to recommend, let me know and I will check them out.

Operation TriGoatWell.
We are starting to get ready for our trip to Tennessee next month. It is an Admin/Moderators meet up for TSP folks. It is called Trigoatwell after moderator Trioxin (now MR. Blank), moderator Goatdog, and us Rockwell. We will have a good number of Mods/Admins there and it will be nice to put faces to the names. We are both looking forward to it and the drive across country. We are driving so that we can take Hannah with us. We decided to take her for a couple of reasons. She is never any trouble and she rides well. We love having her with us and it will save a lot of money. When we went to Texas we left Hannah at Petsmart in their pet hotel. She was so stressed out that she barely ate at all and we decided to never put her through that again. Why pay an arm and a leg to board your pet when they will just be miserable?

Books.
This week I did not read at, I spent time catching up on The Survival Podcast and watching videos from Hoods Woods. Will probably do the same thing this week.

Hoods Woods Videos.
I am on video number 12 right now and will probably do my first review starting next week.
I have learned so much from watching these shows.

Have a great week

long time no post

Well, its been a long time since I posted here. Truthfully, I forget sometimes that I even have a Blog.
I am going to try and make a weekly post from now on. Maybe that will inspire me to post more often.

We are putting a lot of effort into expanding the TSP Gear Shop. It is tough because we both work long hours at our regular jobs. We have some good ideas and are doing the research for suppliers. I started a Facebook page for the Gear Shop, and am checking into other ways of getting exposure for the store. The thing is that I don’t understand the new social networking sites very well, so there will be a learning curve. I am excited and looking forward to it.

Lots of things have happened since my last post. We went to Texas for the Hoodlum Spring Thing in May. We went primarily to meet with Jack Spirko and Ron Hood about business. We met a lot of people that we knew only from the Hoodlum Forum, and got to see some Hoodlums that we already knew. I cannot remember when I had a better time. These are wonderful people and they all treat you as if you are family coming home for a visit. My Facebook friends has increased quite a bit since then and I am looking forward to following every ones journeys. It also makes it nice when reading forum posts to have a frame of reference to that person other than just their avatar. We will definitely be going back next year.

I have been reading a lot lately, both on my Nook and I-pod. I will get my book list updated soon so you can see what I have been reading. I have been taking a break from reading the last week or so because I have been watching a lot of video.

One project I have been working on is watching Ron and Karen Hoods “The Woodsmaster” and “Cave Cooking” videos. I am going to watch all of them and then go back and review one video each week and post the review here. Primarily these reviews will be about what is on the videos rather than a critique of them. There is a lot of good information there and I encourage everyone to pick them up.

Tiff and I are both technology and gadget nuts. We went out last week and bought I-pod touches. We got the 64 gig model. We have both had I-Pods for years and use them every day. The bigger screen on the Touch makes it easier to watch videos and the built in speaker is nice so that you don’t have to use headphones or an FM transmitter to listen to it. With all of the places offering free wi-fi hotspots, we should get even more use from these than the regular I-pods.

Nook, Gunfighter Cast.

NOOK:
Tiffany bought me a Nook e-book reader for Christmas and it came in this week.

I am still learning the operation and functionality of it, but from what I have been able to do with it, it is awesome. It reads books that can be downloaded from Barnes and Noble as well as PDF files that can be downloaded from a variety of resources. It has a 2 gig internal memory that will hold up to 1500 books and she got me a 16 gig micro sd card for it so I will be able to put close to 12,000 books on it total.

I am very excited and have found some wonderful resource books for it already.

I will be searching high and low for new books. If you know of any book sites, please pass them along.

GUNFIGHTER CAST:

Muddyboots over at the Hoodlums forum turned me on to Gunfighter Cast. I will be adding it to my podcasts that I listen to regularly. He mentions both the Hoodlums forum and TSP on episode #22.

Here is a link to their website and you can subscribe from there. Gunfighter Cast.

The Wilderness

Blog, Books, Everest and Big Love

Blog:
One thing that I forgot to put on my list of things to learn for this year is to improve my computer skills. I need to learn how to do some basic things. Especially related to my blog. I am lucky that Tiffany already has just about everything blog related figured out and can bail me out if I screw things up to badly.

Goatdog from TSP forum has expressed an interest in doing some guest blog posts on both this blog and Tiffs blog, so I am hoping that he finds the time to post a couple of things. He is very busy with work and writing a book at the same time so we will have to see if he can make the time.

I have a few other people in mind that I am going to ask to do guest posts.

I neglected this blog badly last year and as a result I lost some of the pages that I had on here. One of the pages that I lost was my books read page. I will start a new one and keep the blog backed up properly so that I do not lose my book list again. I also plan on posting a ton of project pictures. Links and tags need major work and the picture of me in the Who we Are section is outdated, my beard is a little bit longer now.

Books:
Every year in January I read either Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. This year it was Atlas Shrugged. I read it on Audible and Christopher Hurt is the narrator, he does a fantastic job. I love both of these books.

I am half way through Foreign Enemies and Traitors by Mathew Bracken. It is the 3rd book in a trilogy. Very good reading. I will review it when I finish it.

I just downloaded James Rawles book Patriots the Coming Collapse on Audible. I read this book probably 6 years ago after I bought the book from Mr. Rawles himself at a gun show in Costa Mesa. He recently updated the book and added 2 new chapters, a good reason for me to get it on Audible.

Tiff bought me a Nook e-book reader for Christmas and it is supposed to ship tomorrow. I am very anxious to get it and play with it. I have read tons of reviews of e-book readers, and think that I will really like being able to have so many books on one device, and able to take with me any where I go. My only reservation is that I love the actual books and have thousands, l can see myself having physical books with copies of a lot of them on my Nook. Of course this does not even include our extensive Audible library.

Everest:
Just found out tonight that season 3 of Everest, Beyond the Limit is available for download on I-Tunes. I am looking forward to watching it. Everst has always had a draw for me that I cannot explain.

Big Love:
Everest will have to wait a while because Tiff found out Big Love season 3 is also available. Good show and we usually make a marathon out of watching it back to back to back. With pizza and snacks it usually is a light night or all night event.

The Wilderness aka Umbafa

This coming weekend

This Saturday we will be shooting at Burro Canyon. This time we have a rifle/shotgun/pistol range. I intend on bringing all three to shoot. This will be our first time with rifles, and I think a lot of people are excited about it. It will add a change to our normal pistol/shotgun training. I will try and take lots of pictures.

This weekend also I hope to do some leather working. I am going to design and build some small cases. For batteries, ammunition etc. This way I can use some scrap leather to practice the skills I will need in order to make some more intricate cases in the future. I did score some heavy card board tubes at work today that I hope to turn into leather covered map cases someday.

Also planned for this weekend is to start using the dehydrator that Tiff got me for Christmas. Some fruit snacks and possibly some jerky. I have some Venison in the freezer so maybe Deer Jerky.

It is going to be a good weekend.

2010

What is in store for 2010?

We are concentrating on a few things this year. No resolutions, just a few items that we will be concentrating on. Not listed in any particular order.

1)Strengthen and build the 2 business’s we started in 2009.
2)Increasing the networking circles we started and enjoy so much.
3)Master our leather working skills in order to offer new custom products to our store.
4)Financial matters. 2009 was a great year and we will make 2010 even better yet. Increasing the GOOCA fund massively.
5)Shooting skills. Training. Learning to reload.
6)Refining our search for a homestead.
7)Ham radio skills. General license test.
8)Food preparation and long term storage. Canning and Dehydrating.
9)Sewing, again for business related items to add to the store..
10).Gardening. Improving the small garden that Tiff built this year.
11)House remodel and re-organization. We live in an extremely small house.
12)Increase blog posts

Seems like a lot, but like most people we have been wasting a lot of time on things that are not important.

Time is the valuable commodity for us in 2010, how we use it will determine how successful we are.
